PM Vishwakarma Scheme Draws Over 21 Lakh Applications

The PM Vishwakarma Scheme, initiated by the Indian government, has garnered over 21 lakh applications within two and a half months of its launch. The scheme aims to provide skill-upgradation training and support to artisans and craftspeople. Karnataka leads with 6.28 lakh applications, followed by West Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) reveals that 43% of applications are from tailors, 22% from masons, and 9% from carpenters. Surprisingly, 4,013 applications are for the trade of armorers, indicating demand for movie costume creation.

The scheme covers 18 trades, offering formal training, financial assistance, and market linkage. Applications are vetted at various levels, and as of December 1, 17,758 candidates are ready for training. The target is to benefit six lakh individuals in FY 2023-24, with a budget of ₹13,000 crore from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. West Bengal, despite 4.04 lakh applications, lacks committees for vetting.

Training includes basic and advanced sessions with a stipend, exposing participants to modern tools and technologies. Successful candidates receive a ₹15,000 tool kit incentive, collateral-free loans, and training in digital and financial skills to enhance their trade and contribute to the country's GDP.
