India's rich cultural tapestry, Geographical Indication (GI) products reflecting the skills, climate, and age-old techniques passed down from generation to generation...
India's rich cultural tapestry is woven with threads of unique traditions and indigenous practices that have given birth to a myriad of exceptional products. These products, known as Geographical Indications (GIs), derive their distinctive characteristics from the intrinsic qualities of the geographical regions where they are produced, reflecting the skills, climate, and age-old techniques that have been passed down through generations.
As of April 2024, around 642 products in India, were given GI tags that aren’t mere products but emblems of authenticity and exclusivity, their production methods and qualities cannot be replicated elsewhere. so much so that the first GI tag in the country was given two decades ago to the famous Darjeeling tea.
Recognizing the importance of preserving and promoting these invaluable treasures, the India SME Forum along with the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) under the aegis of MSME Innovative Scheme, organised the “Xpo OriGInale – GI Mahotsav”, a series of exhibitions dedicated to showcasing Authorized Geographical Indication Products from across the nation.
The Xpo OriGInale witnessed its triumphant success in Pune and Kolkata and Rajkot. All the editions attracted over 12,000 visitors each and was a remarkable showcase of India’s rich cultural heritage, attracting a gross sales turnover of over one crore, among 100 GI exhibitors, underscoring the immense demand and appreciation for these exclusive, authentic products.
