Experts Project a 20% Increase in Business Loans to MSMEs this Holiday Season.

During the ongoing festive season in India, experts predict a substantial increase in business loans to cash-strapped micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) of around 20%. Several high-frequency indicators, such as Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues, point to a significant rise in consumer expenditure, leading to enhanced economic activity and robust consumer demand. This economic growth is expected to boost the MSME sector and the overall Indian economy.

The festive season has historically been an opportunity for MSMEs to increase sales and market share, particularly in industries like auto, consumer durables, electronics, and fashion. A recent RBI consumer confidence poll suggests that consumers are spending more freely, driving increased demand for credit among MSMEs.

This trend reflects a broader economic transformation across India, with over 50% of the loan demand coming from tier-three cities and beyond, indicating inclusive growth. Short-term loans are in high demand, primarily in sub-sectors related to consumer durables, automobiles, and textiles for purposes like stock purchase, raw material procurement, and business premises renovation.

MSMEs are increasingly turning to online platforms to scale their businesses alongside their physical market presence. However, managing finances for working capital and inventory during the festive season remains complex due to limited access to formal credit channels. Digital data sources like GST return filings are becoming crucial in bridging this credit gap.

MSMEs often face issues with debt and delayed payments, hindering their growth. A significant percentage of businesses require assistance with working capital during the festive season, and payment delays from customers can be substantial. About 73% of SMEs struggle with optimizing cash flow during peak sales seasons.

To address these challenges, technology-driven supply chain solutions and digitally available data sources are being emphasized to provide MSMEs with easier access to credit. The e-commerce sector is offering a substantial opportunity for MSMEs, with platforms customizing their offerings to meet the specific needs of MSME sellers. Overall, the festive season is expected to boost the MSME sector and drive economic growth in India.
